While I am obviously totally biased in the mac direction right now, typing as I am from my bad-ass MBP, I do have to point out that, based on a considerable amount of time actually spent with Vista, it really is overly maligned. As an OS, it is a marked step up from XP, assuming you have the hardware to support it, which you would with a new VAIO. The crapulence is mostly due to manufacturers not providing updated drivers for Vista, and that problem is fixed in most cases at this point in time. I'm really amazed at the Vista hating bandwagon - I find it really hard to believe that anyone who has honestly used it on a capable machine would find it to be as problematic as people make it out to be - in my experience it is very stable, has a lot of features missing from XP, and is fast (once it is up and running). I'm currently running both OSX and Vista Ultimate on this Macbook Pro, and it's very interesting to see the strengths and weaknesses of both systems back to back on the same hardware.
Additionally, most likely (depending on the model) you'll find the VAIO to be a better computer in terms of hardware; Macbooks are pretty midline machines in terms of hardware spec and they're cheaply built. Along those lines, if you get a Macbook, definitely go black. The white ones get really really nasty over time and become impossible to clean.
Sorry for the dissertation - I just wanted to opine that the the Apple ad is, as it is meant to be, emotionally satisfying but not really pertinent. Then again, I know I'm in the minority as it's really popular to piss all over Vista right now. That's all I've got...
